I watched over 150 new films in 2011 and there’s one statement I can say with certainty . . .
. . . 2011 was the year of the Blockbuster.
Sure, there was a smattering of indie treasures and the occasional subtle Hollywood gem but by and large it was a year packed with stoic hero’s and bombastic (usually 3D) explosions. Hollywood mainstream gloss at its highest level, with a few a-typical disasters thrown in for good measure. From Sanctum, Sucker Punch, Battle : LA and Fast Five early in the year to Thor, X-Men : First Class, Transformers 3, Captain America, Harry Potter, Super 8, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Pirates of the Caribbean in the summer months – it was a year crammed with big budget action and will prove hard to beat in 2012 for popcorn entertainment.
So I’ve collected my personal Top 25 Movies of 2011 and have listed them below with the odd excuse and some embedded videos for your convenience. Sadly I missed Take Shelter and Wuthering Heights at the cinema (two films I’m certain would have rode high in my Top 5) and critically applauded films such as The Descendants aren’t hitting the UK until 2012, so I don’t feel that my list is wholly complete, but I still stand by every one of the titles in this list and would endeavour you to check out as many of them as possible. (Also, some of these films were released in the USA in 2010 but only hit the UK in the early days of 2011).
Enjoy!
